Your New Baby

Congratulations! You just bought a new baby bird to be with your family for a long time. These are some tips on how to care for and what to expect from your new tike, as he/she is getting used to its new home.

Taking your bird home:

A box is usually the best way to take your baby home in. This is the safest way to move them, as it prevents injury. When they are moved in a cage, they can break a wing or leg as some get scared.

Getting Home:

When getting home, put the baby in the cage to get used to it. Put their food, millet, water, etc. into the cage and leave them for a while. There are lots of changes happening, as they are moved from my home to yours, new environment, noise, pets, people, etc.

Remember that they are usually scared, as they were taken away from their first home and friends and are not sure what is going on.

After an hour or two, open the cage and gently coach then out. Spend some time with them close to the ground. This prevents injuries as they will likely try to fly down a couple of times. Make play time short, as they get tired fast.

Eating:

It is not uncommon for the bird to not eat or drink for the first 24 - 48 hours. Sometimes they do, but you do not notice. If they don't eat by 48 hours, you should seek help. Make sure they have fresh millet, seeds and water at all time.

Playing with your bird:

When playing with your new baby, make the time short, as they get tired fast and sometimes become over whelmed.

Sleep time:

It is normal for young birds to sleep often. Some do sit on the bottom of the cage with feathers puffed, as this keeps them warm. However if a bird sits puffed for too long, it could be a sign of it being too cold, nervous or sick.

Keeping warm:

It is very important to keep your bird warm. If you suspect that your baby has been exposed to a draft, keep it warm and covered, and keep a close eye on it. If it gets worse, seek medical help right away, as birds tend to get sick and go down hill very fast.

Having fun:

The most important thing to do when you get your new baby bird, is to spend time with him/her out of the cage and have fun!

This will keep it tame and happy.
